Ciclica: Teaching Environmental Stewardship in Mexico
Ciclica is a grassroots education program founded in the city of Aguascalientes, Mexico.
What started as a project in an entrepeneurship class has grown in to a network of educational programs throughout Mexico that are teaching childeren about the importance of enivironmental responsibility and stewardship.
Developing custom curiculm to bring the issues like climate change, waste management, and clean food, Ciclica works with schools to bring environmental education to children in a fun and impactful way. Their lovable cartoon character “Kux” is your guide throughout Ciclica’s curriculum. Kux tells stories about the impacts of things like plastic waste and the history of Mexican stewardship for land and sea.
Ciclica works with schools usually over the course of a semester or a whole year, checking in every few weeks with a special day of programing. These in school visits generate incredible excitement and engagement from the children as the programs are taught through play. Making it fun is key to the entire process. By loving learning about how to take care of their world, these children are growing up valuing not just the environment but their role in it.
Recently Ciclica released a brand new textbook to accompany its course. Kux guides children through chapters about the ocean, composting, recycling, energy, and many more. Each chapter is filled with interactive games and puzzles. Each exercise has been carefully designed to let children make their own choices about an issue so that they can share in the group and discuss the issue. Even elemetary school kids love a debate and this method of teaching encourages each child to express their views clearly and come to an understanding as a group. No wonder Ciclica days are so popular!
This kind of education is sorely needed everywhere and this small band of social entrepeneurs is working hard every day to bring this change to the classrooms of Mexico. Be sure to watch their series of videos, even though they are in spanish they do a great job of showing what they are doing working with the children.
